An anisotropic cosmological model with isotropic background radiation

We present an exact solution of Einstein equations that describes a Bianchi type III spacetime with conformal expansion. The matter content is given by an anisotropic scalar field and two perfect fluids representing dust and isotropic radiation. Mode locking of semiconductor laser with curved waveguide and passive mode expander

Active mode locking is reported for a 1.55 μm semiconductor laser with a curved waveguide and passive mode expander, placed in a wavelength tunable external cavity. One facet with a very low reflectivity of 8×10−6 is achieved through a curved active region that tapers into an underlying passive waveguide, thus expanding the mode to give reduced divergence. 10 GHz pulses of 3.1 ps duration have been generated, with a linewidth of 0.81 nm

Charged Lepton Flavour and CP Violations: Theoretical Impact of Present and Future Experiments

We shortly review and emphasize how l_j -> l_i gamma experiments and the searches for lepton e.d.m. are constraining New Physics model building. They are pure signals of new phenomena around the TeV scale since the SM contributions are definitely negligible. It is quite remarkable that they also give effective tests of the LFV & CPV in seesaw couplings and in grand-unified theories. Constraints on Phases of Supersymmetric Flavour Conserving Couplings

In the unconstrained MSSM, we reanalyze the constraints on the phases of supersymmetric flavour conserving couplings that follow from the electron and neutron electric dipole moments (EDM). We find that the constraints become weak if at least one exchanged superpartner mass is >O(1 TeV) or if we accept large cancellations among different contributions. However, such cancellations have no evident underlying symmetry principle. For light superpartners, models with small phases look like the easiest solution to the experimental EDM constraints. This conclusion becomes stronger the larger is the value of $\tan\beta$. We discuss also the dependence of $\epsilon_K$, $\Delta m_B$ and $b\to s\gamma$ decay on those phases.Comment: 38 pages, 22 figures, uses epsfig.sty, axodraw.sty (not included); error in sign of gluino contribution to EDM of u and d quarks and few figures corrected, important conclusions unchange

Next to Leading Order Semi-inclusive Spin Asymmetries

We have computed semi-inclusive spin asymmetries for proton and deuteron targets including next to leading order (NLO) QCD corrections and contributions coming from the target fragmentation region. These corrections have been estimated using NLO fragmentation functions, parton distributions and also a model for spin dependent fracture functions which is proposed here. We have found that NLO corrections are small but non-negligible in a scheme where gluons are polarised and that our estimate for target fragmentation effects does not modify significantly charged asymmetries but affects the so called difference asymmetries.Comment: Latex, 14 pages, 6 figures in 4 Postcript file

Language and Culture modulate online Semantic Processing

Language has been shown to influence non-linguistic cognitive operations such as colour perception, object categorization and motion event perception. Here, we show that language also modulates higher level processing, such as semantic knowledge. Using event-related brain potentials, we show that highly fluent Welsh-English bilinguals require significantly less processing effort when reading sentences in Welsh which contain factually correct information about Wales, than when reading sentences containing the same information presented in English. Crucially, culturally irrelevant information was processed similarly in both Welsh and English. Our findings show that even in highly proficient bilinguals, language interacts with factors associated with personal identity, such as culture, to modulate online semantic processing

Horizontal and vertical movements of starry smooth-hound Mustelus asterias in the northeast Atlantic

Commercial landings of starry smooth-hound Mustelus asterias in northern European seas are increasing, whilst our knowledge of their ecology, behaviour and population structure remains limited. M. asterias is a widely distributed demersal shark, occupying the waters of the southern North Sea and Irish Sea in the north, to at least the southern Bay of Biscay in the south, and is seasonally abundant in UK waters. There are no species-specific management measures for the northeast Atlantic stock, and the complexity of its population structure is not yet fully understood. To address this issue, we deployed both mark-recapture and electronic tags on M. asterias to gain novel insights into its horizontal and vertical movements. Our data suggest that the habitat use of M. asterias changes on a seasonal basis, with associated changes in geographical distribution, depth utilisation and experienced temperature. We report the first direct evidence of philopatry for this species, and also provide initial evidence of sex-biased dispersal and potential metapopulation-like stock structuring either side of the UK continental shelf. Investigations of finer-scale vertical movements revealed clear diel variation in vertical activity. The illustrated patterns of seasonal space-use and behaviour will provide important information to support the stock assessment process and will help inform any future management options

On Charge Quantization and Abelian Gauge Horizontal Symmetries
